Ceramic Coating
-
What is it?
Industry-grade ceramic coating is a chemical polymer solution that is applied to the exterior of a vehicle to protect it from external paint damage. Typically applied by hand, it blends with the paint of your car and creates an additional hydrophobic layer of protection, creating that glass-like shine. The chemical bonding creates a new layer, leaving the factory paint untouched. Ceramic coating is an alternative to waxing. The main idea is to prevent dirt, grime, and stain marks from appearing on the paint job and ruining the clear coat.

Why is it needed?
Ceramic coating, also sometimes called nano-ceramic coating, is a permanent or semi-permanent solution to your worries depending upon the coating and type of polymer used. Due to its chemically intrinsic properties, it does not break down in normal atmospheric conditions like rain or summer. Ceramic coating provides protection to your clear coat and paint from harmful UV rays, chemical stains, and other grime. Ceramic coating allows an easier maintenance inside and outside your vehicle. All the Ceramic Coatings are going to protect your vehicle the same way. All Ceramic Coatings are durable, shiny and they are going to last a whole lot longer than any wax or sealant. Ceramic Coatings vary on their thickness, slickness, durability, longevity and the gloss.

Are there different types/levels of protection?
There are only two types of Ceramic Coatings, Professional Grade Ceramic Coatings and Consumer Grade Ceramic Coatings.
Pro Ceramic Coatings are thick, super-glue like, and often include multiple steps to cure it into a hard thick layer, these Ceramic Coatings provide the best durability and looks. Pro Ceramic Coating companies also require the installer to be vetted, professionally trained, maintain a good reputation and facility requirements such as a clean room, insurance and infrared curing lamps.
Consumer Grade Ceramic Coatings can be bought online and are typically a single level application. They are much more forgiving to apply, but they don't cure as hard, so you really don't get a deep shine and durability associated with the Professional Grade Ceramic Coatings.
Each type of ceramic coating also brings a different longevity of protection for your vehicle. The longer lifespans of ceramic coatings are from the Professional Grade Ceramic Coating, up to approximately 10-15 years. However, some of the higher-end Consumer Grade Ceramic Coating’s can also give protection up to approximately 9 years.

Why is Ceramic Coating so expensive?
Most of the time and money spent on a coating job, is the labor to prepare the paint for Ceramic Coating. Professional Grade Ceramic Coatings take three to four days to install and Consumer Grade Ceramic Coatings take two to three days to install. Preparing the paint requires a full exterior wash, dry, iron removal, clay bar treatment, and paint correction (depending on severity of paint this step could take multiple stages).
Additional cost involved is the level of protection desired, from 6 months and up to 15 years. The longer the protection, the higher the price due to grade and quality of the chemical, steps of application, curing time, and labor.
